Most drones are sensitive pieces of equipment. Without proper protection, they can get banged up or damaged by water and thus rendered useless. We do think, however, that there are five qualities by which any case for the DJI Spark should be judged—toughness, waterproofing, storage capacity, portability and price—and that the right balance of these will get you your ideal case.
At the most basic level, you want a case that is strong and can absorb shocks. Since the Spark isn’t waterproof, it’s crucial that it be able to keep out water as well. It’s got to be able to cleanly and conveniently store as many accessories for your Spark as possible without becoming bulky, cumbersome or difficult to carry. On the whole, the Deyard Waterproof DJI Spark Case is an excellent case. Although the exterior looks like it’s made of carbon fiber, you should know that it’s actually made of a combination of polyurethane and EVA instead. The case still provides excellent protection for your drone and would have to be subjected to a great deal of pressure before your drone can suffer any damage. While we certainly wouldn’t recommend deliberately submerging the case in water with your drone inside, it provides excellent waterproofing, and running water slides right off it.
The case’s storage capacity, in our view, is its strongest attribute. With strong shock-absorbing foam that keeps your drone and major accessories like its charger, batteries and remote in place, the case’s mesh pocket will give you ample space to store any additional wires or other add-ons. While it doesn’t have the absolute largest carrying capacity of any case that we’ve examined, it does have the best capacity when that attribute is balanced against portability. Larger-capacity cases tend to be bulky and borderline unmanageable while the DJI Spark case is a breeze to carry around. It fits easily into larger luggage or just about anywhere else that you might need to keep it, and its handle makes it effortless to carry around.Lastly, the price is a godsend. It isn’t the absolute cheapest Spark case of all, but it is essentially the cheapest when balanced against every other feature that it provides. Toughness
The primary function of a drone case is to be able to prevent a drone from being damaged in a fall or from some other kind of external shock. This case does that wonderfully. It’s extremely durable despite its lightweight design. Its shock-absorbing foam lining will help absorb all but the most severe shocks and keep your drone in one piece even as the case is being knocked around. While it’s true that there are more durable cases available for the Spark that have harder exteriors, those cases tend to be bulky, difficult to carry and very expensive. Taking all things into account, then, this case provides superb protection for your drone.
Waterproofing
A truly great carrying case will do more than merely project your drone from blunt trauma, falls and the like. While some drones are waterproof, the DJI Spark is not among them. The right carrying case for your drone, then—whatever its other virtues may be—will need to be waterproof. The Deyard Waterproof Spark Drone Case certainly is. Water slides right off its smooth carbon-fiber-like exterior, and the lining helps keep water from being able to drip into the case. It’s safe to carry outside in heavy rain, and it will help keep your drone safe from splashes off all kinds of liquids. We do have one small caveat to issue, however: While the case’s lining and insulation are superb, we don’t recommend submerging it completely underwater. Unless you want to go deep-sea diving with your drone case, however, this shouldn’t be a problem. On the whole, the case has excellent waterproofing.
Storage Capacity
This is where the Deyard Waterproof DJI Spark Case is truly at its best. As we mentioned above, the most pressing reason to buy another Spark case in addition to the one that DJI already provides you is that that original case is very small and can’t carry much. It will be able to fit your drone and a few batteries, but beyond that, you’ll be stuck carrying all other accessories separately. Deyard’s case can fit your drone, its remote, two additional batteries (three if you keep one in the drone), your charger and a transmitter. That, however, only accounts for the case’s foam pockets. It also has a mesh insert into which you can fit all kinds of additional cables, tablets, three-plate battery chargers or whatever other accessories you may need for your drone. For its size, this case can fit a surprisingly large number of accessories.
Portability
Measuring 12.5 inches by 9.8 inches by 4.4 inches, this case is somewhat larger than the case that originally comes with the DJI Spark. Of course, there is inevitably a trade-off between portability and carrying capacity, so smaller isn’t always better. Remember, the case provided by the DJI can’t even fit the Spark’s remote controller, to say nothing of other accessories. This Deyard case can, and it does so in style and without the slightest appearance of excessive bulk. Unless you’re an extreme stickler for portability, you’ll have nothing to object to here. The case is fairly small, very easy to carry and can be stored away virtually anywhere.
Price
With a decent number of heavy-duty military-grade cases out there sometimes going for more than $60, this case is a blessing to cost-conscious drone users. While it provides a level of protection close to those more expensive cases—and arguably even some advantages over them in the realm of portability—it sells for only a fraction of their price. While Amazon prices can fluctuate from time to time, the Deyard case can be yours for about $23. While this is more expensive than the very cheapest Spark cases, which usually sell for somewhere in the neighborhood of $10, the advantages it provides over them in durability, waterproofing and carrying capacity are so great that this premium outweighs any cost considerations. For the price, this case provides phenomenal value.
